Rainy Days and Rainy Nights

This is June, the rainy season. For the last couple of years it barely happened. This year we are truly experiencing RAIN. Tropical rain is lovely, it isn’t cold, makes every thing smell fresh and cools the temperature and humidity to something pleasant. Storms blow in full of roaring thunder and flashing lightening. I find it energizing, not so with my cat. She spends storm time under my bed.

Where my apartment is located I don’t get the full effect of lightening as I am surrounded by 2 and 3 story buildings. I see bright light flashes but not the actual lightening bolt. I would like to see the bolts.

We have been under a hurricane watch, with the weather reports predicting it would hit land well south of us, which it did. Hurricanes have hit here, but rarely and partially as we are protected by the bay. But we get the heavy downpours and storm surges that send waves clear in to town.

In a heavy downpour that floods the streets and exceeds the ability of whatever drainage systems are in place here, it gets quite odorous. Making one wonder how healthy it is to wade through ankle deep water to just cross the street.

Yesterday my friend Marsha and I enjoyed the rain sitting in the open air cafe La Kalle eating lunch and playing board games.

Last night with a soft breeze blowing and a light rain falling, the inside thermometer reading 80f/27c, I found it necessary to turn off the fan. And had a light wrap across my shoulders.

I do thank the universe and Mother Nature for such a lovely way of life. Signing off KO

January 6th, Three Kings Day

The last couple of days I saw the construction of all the temporary booths being erected along the main drag of Juan Alvarez to house an enormous amount of what appears to be cheap plastic toys.

Since I’m told the Mexican children receive gifts on 3 Kings day I guess parents wait util the last minute to shop. Sure solves the problem of hiding gifts from snooping kids. There are also tables and tables of the special cake that has the little figures baked in it. They come in every size imaginable depending on the size of your family gathering. And if I remember correctly who ever gets the baby Jesus in their piece gets to host the whole group to a tamale

feast on Candelmas  Day. Then there is the “Bike Market” along the canal.

Last night from my balcony I watched the fire dancer perform,  not the best view as the palm tree gets in the way a bit, entertaining none the less.  This was followed by a brief but hard rain shower, all done in minutes

There also has been a mass exodus of Mexican tourists as their holidays ends, the foot traffic around town is manageable again and hopefully the music from the Zocolo won’t be blasting down our street nightly. I’m forever amazed at how folks can party all night until six am. It’s 5:00 am and the bar down the street is still playing music, this morning the music is pleasant and not just the “thump thump” type and not so loud to be heard inside the apartment but surprising pleasant out here on my balcony.

The Senor just suggested going to the beach today. I’m so excited!  Getting him out and about has been a real chore this year. Sometimes I feel a little “trapped” up in our room.  Signing off KO

LOST A DAY

Tarps hung st edge of sidewalk

On the afternoon of the 6th, Tree Kings Day here in Mexico, I set out to buy some trim at the fabric store and instead discovered that for 5 blocks and maybe more a whole new bazar of temporary shops had been set up. Tarps had been hung street-side and on the side-walk between the tarps and the shops are a myriad little booths of toys, clothing , mandarin oranges, and Rosca Cakes all for Three Kings Day.

Evidently they started on the 5th and I guess will be gone on the 7th and disappears like a circus leaving town.  Evidently the Mexicans  don’t believe in shopping early, and this looked like a bit of a shopping frenzy to me.  The Rosca Cakes are a wreath type pastry cake within it is a small baby Jesus figurine.  I’m told that whom ever receives the piece with the baby Jesus in it is to host the same guests to a fiesta on February 2nd, Candlemas Day, the 2nd of February.   I’ve also been told that it’s tamales that are to be fixed for the fiesta on Candlemas Day. Later that evening our

Since I didn’t find any suitable trim to make straps for my new pant/jumpsuit I decided the sewing ladies would be able to  put straps on it for me.  They are so sweet and agreeable,  I will pick it up from them this afternoon.  It was a good decision because I was wanting black straps but out in good light I discover I really need navy blue straps. That was the whole extent of my yesterday as I really wasn’t feeling up to par and found it necessary to keep close to home and slept or read most of the day.

Work up this morning feeling like my old self, scratch that, my normal self again. After my morning swim  my street dogs  found me, they were in luck, I had  bones  left over from our ham hock soup last night.  As I walked by the Plaza, a pick up game of soccer was happening at the basketball court. Just another Zihuatanejo day.
